Some men have a simple requirement for hair maintenance--cut it all off. The hair clipper is a barber's best tool. With the sale of barbershop-style clippers at many retail stores, non-professionals can use clippers to cut a man's hair.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hair clippers
  • Cape, or towel
  1. Step 1

Find an easily cleaned location to cut a man's hair. If you're accessible to a patio or sidewalk, consider clipping the hair outside. If not, it's O.K. to clip inside but do so on a hard surface such as tile or wood floors.

  2. Step 2

Protect the man's clothing by using a barbershop cape around his shoulders. Use a towel if you're not able to use a cape.

  3. Step 3

Determine the style of cut and length the man wants. Attach the size adjustments to the clippers for different lengths. If he wants a clean cut to the scalp, you're not going to need to use an attachment.

  4. Step 4

Begin on the side of the hair, and work the clippers straight up and back. Work in sections to achieve different length cuts by changing the attachment after you're finished in one section. If you're not using attachments and cutting one length, work slow and evenly in sections to maintain control over the clippers.

  5. Step 5

Move to the back of the head and clip the hair straight up.

  6. Step 6

Trim the base of the neck by using the clippers straight down. Clip to where the shirt collar would come to for an even, clean look.

  7. Step 7

Remove the cape or towel and brush off excess hair.

Tips & Warnings
  • Apply oil or a cream if you've shaved the man's head.
