A layout in jazz dancing is a dramatic movement where the dancer extends the leg and arches the back at once. This is an advanced move and takes a lot of strength and coordination.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Warm up and stretch your back and legs before jazz dancing. From a standing position bend over to the ground, hold it for 10 to 30 seconds, slowly come up, put your fists at the small of your back and arch over holding for another 10 to 30 seconds. Repeat several times.

  2. Step 2

Step forward on one leg in releve (on your toes) and bring the other leg to retire (draw the foot up to the supporting knee). Hold your arms in first position during this step.

  3. Step 3

Move the leg in a smooth motion from retire to the air in front of you with your toes pointed. Arch your back as far back as you can at the same time you lift your leg. Lift your leg to 90 degrees or higher.

  4. Step 4

Throw your arms out to this side and up over your head as the back arches and leg is lifted. As your arms go up throw your head back.

  5. Step 5

Lower the working leg and finish in a tucked position on the ground. You can also go from a layout to a turn or transition to another jazz movement.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember, a layout is a drawn out fluid movement, so make it big and dramatic.
