How to Hold an Infant in the Water

There are two basic techniques used to hold an infant in the water while teaching him how to swim. The shark hold is the first technique that you will use on your infant. The double leg shark hold is a more advanced technique that you will use on your infant once she is more comfortable in the water.

Instructions

    Shark Hold Technique

  1. Step 1

    Hold your infant with his back against your right side.

  2. Step 2

    Place your left hand under her left armpit.

  3. Step 3

    Tilt your infant forward slightly so he is horizontal. Keep her head above the water.

  4. Step 4

    Grasp your infant's right thigh with your left hand.

  5. Double Leg Shark Hold Technique

  6. Step 1

    Hold your infant with his back against your stomach.

  7. Step 2

    Place your hands on her thighs with your thumbs on her inner thighs.

  8. Step 3

    Wrap your thumbs under his thighs.

  9. Step 4

    Allow your infant to move her upper body freely while you support the lower body.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not use this technique until your infant can hold her head above the water.
