How to Train Your Rottweiler to Heel

By eHow Contributing Writer

Rottweilers are big strong dogs that need to be taught to heel early on, while they are still manageable. Training your dog to heel while he is still a puppy also shows him that you are the leader of the pack and the one he must obey.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Training collar and leash
  1. Step 1

Position the dog on your left side so her eyes are even with your legs. Make sure she is wearing the training collar and leash and hold the leash with both your hands. Keep your left arm close to your left side and your right arm bent with your hand close to your waist.

  2. Step 2

Say, "Heel," in a clear, confident voice and step off with your left foot to begin walking. Choose a nearby destination so you can walk purposefully and briskly.

  3. Step 3

Praise your puppy when he begins moving in the direction you want him to move. If he begins moving in the wrong direction, quickly switch your own direction and gently tug his leash to get his attention.

  4. Step 4

Vary the speed and direction you are walking to keep the dog's interest. You want to teach her to keep her eyes on you while you are walking.

  5. Step 5

End your training session on a successful note. Make sure your puppy is successful and praise him with words and a small treat at the end of every session.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember to plan short frequent training sessions.
  • Gradually increase the number of distractions present in your training session. You want your Rottweiler to eventually be able to heel in any place and under any circumstances.
