The French horn produces a rich sound to complement the brass section of any band. With nearly twelve feet of tubing wrapped into this circular horn, it is one of the more challenging instruments to play.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Sit up straight in your chair. This will put you in the best position for optimal breathing and allow you to create strong notes with your horn. Both feet should be flat on the floor in the most comfortable position for you to partially support the horn.

  2. Step 2

Rest the bottom of the horn closest to the bell on your right thigh, holding the horn at about a 45-degree angle. Be sure the bell isn't directed behind you as this is where the sound will go. Position the opening of the bell towards the side as much as possible.

  3. Step 3

Position your left had so your first three fingers are on the three top valves and your thumb is on the fourth valve on the back of the horn. Not all French horns have the fourth valve. If yours doesn't have one there should be a ring to put your thumb in. There should also be a small hook where you can place your little finger and help support the horn.

  4. Step 4

Place your right hand in the bell for support, leaving the opening as unblocked as possible. Don't stuff your hand into the bell as this will muffle the sound. As you progress in playing lessons you will learn how to use your right hand to purposely manipulate your volume and tone.

  5. Step 5

Bring the horn to your mouth when you're ready to play rather than leaning into the horn. This will preserve your good posture and ability to breathe properly.
