Not only is the elbow the perfect tool for working the deep tissues of the body, it also helps relieve the stress on the therapist's body by giving the hands and fingers a break. The elbows can be used in deep tissue massage to work virtually any area of the body; however, a few tips will give you an idea how to relieve tension in the lower back.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stand at the side of your table about one arm's length away from your client's body. Bend the knees and place your dominant foot forward so that you can lean your body weight into your client. This position limits the amount of upper body strength needed for deep tissue work, helping to conserve your energy and protect your low back.

  2. Step 2

Place your lower forearm just above your clients hip bone, anchoring your arm firmly. Place your upper arm next to your lower arm. Hold your lower arm steady and begin a rocking motion with your upper arm and move up the spine, pushing down and up, opening the spaces of between the vertebrae. Repeat two or three times.

  3. Step 3

Repeat the original arm position with your forearms together just above the hip bone and roll your arms up and down, from wrist to elbow, along the thick muscles that surround the spine. Be careful not to rub directly on the bones themselves. Continue this motion up and down the spine.

  4. Step 4

Turn so that your side is facing the table and you are facing your client's head. Bend at the elbow so your hand is near your side and push your elbow and upper forearm into the muscles surrounding the spine. You can make small circular motions or shake your wrist to create vibration while working up and down the spine.

  5. Step 5

Use these deep tissue massage techniques on almost any part of the body to work deeper without stressing your own body.
