The most basic crochet stitch is the chain stitch. You'll need a chain stitch to start any project, whether it's hats, sweaters, blankets, or anything else. Of course, the crochet chain stitch is not difficult to do.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Yarn
  • Crochet hook
Step1
Tie a slip knot. Start by tying the yarn as if it were your shoelaces. Instead of feeding one end of your yarn through the loop, feed the middle of one strand of yarn through. Put your crochet hook through the loop of your knot.
Step2
Hold the crochet hook with your right hand, and use your right hand to hold the knot still during Step 3.
Step3
Get a good grip on your yarn. Pull a length of yarn out of your skein. Starting inside of your left hand, wrap the yarn from your palm around the pinky finger, under your ring and middle fingers and over your index finger. Use your middle finger and thumb on your left hand to hold the knot.
Step4
Bring the crochet hook toward you to begin your chain stitch. You do not need to push the yarn farther through the knot, just angle the needle toward you so that the hook gets in front of the yarn.
Step5
Move the crochet hook under and around the yarn. As the hook comes up on the far side of the yarn, turn it so it is ready to grab the strand in your left hand.
Step6
Complete the chain stitch by hooking onto the yarn and pulling it through the knot loop.
