When cooking poultry, such as a Cornish game hen, it's essential to cook the bird thoroughly. Undercooked poultry can spread disease and make people ill.

From Quick Guide: Cooking Basics
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Oven
  • Cornish game hen
  • Roasting pan
  • Aluminum foil
  • Toothpick
  • Tongs
  • Kitchen thermometer
  1. Step 1

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

  2. Step 2

Place the Cornish game hens with the breast sides up in a roasting pan. Cover the roasting pan with aluminum foil.

  3. Step 3

Put the roasting pan in the preheated oven and cook the Cornish game hens for approximately one hour or until done.

  4. Step 4

Use a toothpick to poke a thigh of one of the Cornish game hens and look at the juices that come out. If the juices run clear (and not pink), the Cornish game hens are done.

  5. Step 5

Use tongs to pick up a leg or a wing. When fully cooked, the legs or wings should move around easily, or feel as if they could easily break off.

  6. Step 6

Pick up a Cornish game hen with a pair of tongs. Look at the underside of the bird to see if the Cornish game hen appears to be cooked through.

  7. Step 7

Continue cooking the Cornish game hens if they aren't fully cooked. Repeat Steps four through six to check for doneness.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can also use a meat thermometer to check for doneness. Place the probe of the thermometer in the middle of the thigh. The Cornish game hen is safe to eat when the thermometer reads 180 degrees Fahrenheit.
