The color guard, sometimes called a flag squad, is a group that uses flags to add visual components to musical performances. A flick is a simple movement in which you toss your flag in a 180 degree angle, or half rotation.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Color guard flag
  1. Step 1

Begin with the flag at the shoulder and hip position. Your right hand should grab the flag about six inches into the silk, and your left hand will be on the flagpole. Your right palm will face up and your left hand palm will face down.

  2. Step 2

Make sure the silk part of your color guard flag is not wrapped around the pole.

  3. Step 3

Perform a flick by pushing the flag with your right hand. Make a small, yet forceful, upward motion with your right hand. At the same time, release the flagpole with your left hand.

  4. Step 4

Catch the flag when the silk of the color guard flag reaches your hip and your left hand. You palms should be in the same position as when you started your flick.

  5. Step 5

Continue the color guard flick by repeating Step 3.

  6. Step 6

Grab the flag again, when the silk of your color guard flag reaches your right shoulder and right hand. Again, the palms of your hands should be facing in the same direction as when you started. This is how you perform a flick.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be careful not to spin the flagpole as you perform your flick. This will cause the silk of your flag to wrap around the pole.
