Ayurveda is an ancient Indian medicine system that emphasizes treating the whole body as a system. Head massage is one of the most important techniques in ayurveda since it stimulates important nerve centers and relieves tension and stress throughout the body.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Place a moderate amount of linseed, coconut, olive or sesame oil in your hand. Rub your hands together to spread the oil and warm it up. Then rub your hands, with your fingers spread slightly apart, through the hair and along the scalp of the person receiving the massage.

  2. Step 2

Gently work your way around the whole head with your fingers slightly bent. Move from the forehead to the top of the head and continue to the base of the neck.

  3. Step 3

Place your thumb approximately midway between the top of the person's nose and the top of his forehead. Make small swirling motions with your thumb on that spot, moving the skin of the person's head instead of moving your thumb out of place.

  4. Step 4

Use your center fingers to massage both temples at the same time, making moderate sized circles. Continue this part of the massage for between one and two minutes.

  5. Step 5

Turn the person's head to the side and cup the head with your thumb on the top and fingers extended towards the base of the neck. Move your hand up and down in this position to massage from the base of the neck to the top of the head. Turn the head to the other side and repeat.
