Applying primer to the natural nail before you apply the artificial nail helps the artificial nail adhere. However, this application can be a tricky process for a new or at-home manicurist. You must prepare both your natural nails and the artificial ones before you apply the primer.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Clip the edges of the artificial tip with a nail clipper to achieve the desired length and shape.

  2. Step 2

File the rough edges of the artificial tip with a nail file. Continue filing until the artificial tip is completely smooth.

  3. Step 3

Dust off the natural nail and the artificial tip with a nail brush to remove excess dust. If you leave the dust on, it can keep the primer from adhering properly.

  4. Step 4

Apply nail prep only to the natural nail, using a scrubbing motion. This temporarily removes the moisture and most oils from the nail.

  5. Step 5

Apply primer in small amounts to the natural nail only. Applying it in small amounts at a time ensures that the primer isn't able to flood the nail plate and cause a chemical burn to the nail bed.

  6. Step 6

Repeat each step for all ten nails, and allow them to dry to a chalky white color.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep your fingers away from the nail primer. It can cause chemical burns.
