How to Use a Credit Card Chargeback

A credit card chargeback takes place when a customer asks for a refund on a purchase. It usually happens when the customer is unhappy with the purchase--the product arrives damaged or late, the product is not what was promised or the charge was made without the cardholder's knowledge--though it can also be used by unscrupulous people to enact all kinds of fraud. If you feel that a purchase has been charged to your credit card unfairly, you can use a credit card chargeback to get your money refunded.

    Instructions

      • 1

Contact the seller and request a refund or a replacement for the product. A chargeback can be very complicated and take some time, and many merchants have honorable refund policies that you can use to resolve the situation more satisfactorily. Only if that isn't possible should you use a credit card chargeback.

      • 2

Determine the precise reason for the chargeback and prepare ample documentation. The more information you can provide to your credit card issuer, the more rapidly they can process the chargeback. Include copies of the sales receipt, emails to the seller, photos of any damaged or inadequate goods and specific reasons for why the sale should be refunded.

Double-check the disputed sale and make sure that you cannot recall making it. Some merchants use different names or titles that show up on the credit card statement, which can be easy to mistake for a bogus charge. Nail those charges down before you instigate a chargeback, and make sure that they don't arise from a legitimate purchase that you don't recognize or cannot remember.

Contact the card-issuing bank and let them know that you wish to dispute a charge. Be sure to give the reasons for doing so and to provide any documentation or other information you may have gathered.

Follow up with the bank, even after you have received a provisional chargeback. Often, the bank will provide refund credit on a provisional basis while it conducts an investigation into your claims and makes sure that they are valid. This does not necessarily mean that the situation is resolved: they may determine that the credit refund isn't warranted, and you should be diligent in requesting a solid resolution.

    Tips & Warnings

    • A credit card chargeback can take a long time to resolve, anywhere from a few weeks to 6 months or longer. Be patient as you go through the process, and understand that it may take some time before you get your money back.
