How to Earn Cash-Back Bonuses With a Discover Card

The Discover Card cash-back program is one of the oldest and most comprehensive available. With the Discover Card, not only can you earn bonuses by shopping at your regular retailers, but the card also offers you the opportunity of shopping online through a specialty retailer center, which features additional discounts and rebates.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Sign up for a cash-back Discover Card through its official website (see Resources below). The website offers detailed information on the benefits and bonuses offered by the card, plus tips on how to maximize returns and how to obtain additional benefits, such as earning miles or gift certificates.

  2. Step 2

Make all your purchases with the Discover Card. While selected retailers offer about 5 percent cash back, the company itself will give you 1 percent back on any purchase made from retailers that do not participate in the program.

  3. Step 3

Get on the Discover Card mailing list. Every 3 months, a new list of retailers offering cash-back bonuses is emailed to subscribers. These bonuses, a guaranteed 5 percent cash back, are available for only 3 months, after which new companies are chosen for the list. Examples of companies offering cash-back bonuses include movie theaters, gas stations and restaurants.

  4. Step 4

Shop at the ShopDiscover online retailer chain to get the most bonuses (see Resources below). Companies such as FTD offer 20 percent on magazine subscriptions, while Nike and Barnes and Noble give you 15 percent. Other companies (especially electronics) stay at the 5 percent minimum.

  5. Step 5

Sign up for the Get More program of Discover Card to earn up to 5 percent on any purchases related to travel and car rentals. You can do so through your bank or financial institution or online through a series of direct and indirect links.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some retailers may not accept the Discover Card at their brick-and-mortar shops but will take it if you buy through their online storefront. Always double-check to see if that option is available with your favorite company.
  • If you don't want the cash, the Cashback Bonus system of Discover allows you to earn cash back that can be converted into a gift card or a credit toward your card balance.
