Automotive technology has grown rapidly within the past 10 years, especially with truck and SUV engines. The 1990s saw a rise in truck and SUV performance with the advancements of cold air intake systems. The concept is simple--replace hot air that flows to the engine with cold air to increase horsepower and efficiency. Volant Cool Air Intakes invents new and cutting-edge intake systems for trucks, SUVs and some sport compact cars. Volant used widespread dynamometer testing to learn that most cold air intakes on the market allowed engine heat to enter into the intake tubes, despite the application of a heat shield.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine how much more horsepower you crave. Volant cold air intake systems average a horsepower increase of 15 in truck and SUV engines, and some have tested as high as 30. Factors for the maximum output of horsepower include your vehicle's engine size, placement of the cold air intake system and the environment where you live.

  2. Step 2

Select a cold air intake system that is cost-effective. Volant systems cost from $130 to $580.

  3. Step 3

Customize a Volant cold air intake system on the Web at eAutoWorks, Auto Parts Warehouse or HyperformanceAuto (see Resources below). Click on the make and model of your truck, SUV or sport compact car to select a customized Volant system.

  4. Step 4

Keep as much hot air out of the combustion process as possible. One of Volant's most innovative designs is insulating the air filter. Every cold air intake system places the new cold air filter in an insulated compartment, keeping the air flow as cold as possible. Volant was also one of the first to manufacture a cold air intake system out of X-link polyethylene, which keeps air cold and engine volume low.

  5. Step 5

Purchase accessories for your cold air intake system. Volant produced the first ram air scoop. It extends from the air filter compartment to your vehicle's front bumper. The result is an accumulation of colder, denser air that is great for engine efficiency.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep in mind that Volant manufactures cold air intake systems only for trucks, SUVs and some sport compact cars.
  • Make sure you select an intake system that requires little to no vehicle modifications. Volant's intake systems need little or no adjustments.
  • If you decide to purchase a cold air intake system that is cheaper than average, be sure to know the seller's reputation before you buy.
  • Throttle body spacers do not work with a Volant system.
