Thirty-five years ago, K&N Engineering began making air filters for motorcycle racing. It grew to become a global enterprise of automotive parts and accessories. Today K&N, still a family-owned company, develops cold air intake systems that smooth and straighten airflow for top-ranked engine power. K&N has many cold air intake systems, also known as performance intake systems, for your specific vehicle.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Visit online auto retailers such as AutoAnything, Cold Air Intake Shop or Cold Air Intake Direct to purchase K&N cold air intake systems (see Resources below). You will need your vehicle's make, model, year and possibly engine size to find which K&N series is well-suited for your engine.

  2. Step 2

Select the vehicles in which you want to increase engine performance. K&N‘s 57 series Fuel Injection Performance Kits (FIPK) are compatible with most vehicles on the market. They are manufactured with nonmetallic intake tubes to maximize airflow without increasing sound. The 57 series also comes with factory holes and mounting points that allow it to fit most engine bays.

  3. Step 3

Consider the 63 series AirCharge kit. It is the sister product to the 57 series and comes with a heat shield to increase colder airflow.

  4. Step 4

Boost your truck's or SUV's power with K&N's 77 series. The metal intake kits are built to eliminate any airflow restrictions to the engine.

  5. Step 5

Select a K&N 69 series Typhoon intake for your sport compact vehicle. Available in cold air intake, short ram or complete cold intakes, the Typhoon is designed for show as well as performance. Every intake has a mandrel-bent, aluminum intake tube for cooler airflow.

  6. Step 6

Shop for the 57i series for your European model. Designed for import vehicles as well as domestic varieties, the 57i system is available in different forms to fit the tightest engine space.

  7. Step 7

Decide whether the air filter on your intake system needs an upgrade. K&N cold air intake filters use innovative cotton-gauze material to capture the most dirt possible. Built to last your engine's lifespan, the filters are reusable and washable after 100,000 miles.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is a good idea not to change your driving habits after installation of the cold air intake system.
  • K&N's 63 and 57i kits are street legal in most states but not in California.
