How to Compare Resin and Ceramic Veneers

If you are considering veneers, you will probably be offered two choices by your dentist: resin or ceramic. While most dentists will recommend ceramic because of the many advantages associated with this type of veneer, you should carefully compare the pros and cons of each type before you make a final decision.

1. Think about durability. Ceramic or porcelain veneers need little to no attention for at least 10 years (sometimes 15 years) after being bonded to your teeth. Resin veneers, on the other hand, can chip or break, will stain more easily and may require touch-ups if you experience cavities or need dental treatment.

2. Consider the cost. This may be one of the first things you need to compare, as ceramic veneers are 5 to 10 times more expensive than resin veneers. Keep in mind, however, that ceramic veneers require less aftercare, so you may be able to make up for the price difference in the long run.

3. Keep in mind that resin veneers do not look exactly like real teeth. Ceramic veneers, on the other hand, reflect light in the same way as natural teeth, so the overall look is much more natural. Resin veneers are fine for back teeth, especially in the top of your mouth, while ceramic veneers are a much better choice for front teeth.

4. Consider the time invested. Ceramic veneers require several visits to the dentist for measuring, molding and fitting. If your teeth are not in perfect condition, you will need to undergo extensive cleaning (scaling), gum treatment and/or cavity repair before you can have the ceramic veneers implanted.

5. Talk to a cosmetic dentist who specializes in implants, especially veneers. While all dentists are qualified to give you general information, a specialist will be able to show you before and after photos and give you detailed information about your particular needs and what to expect after the veneers are in place.

Tips & Warnings

• When you compare resin and ceramic veneers, keep in mind that resin veneers are molded around your own teeth, while ceramic veneers are shaped in a laboratory and then bonded onto your teeth to cover them completely.

• While resin veneers can be repaired if chipped or broken, ceramic veneers cannot and must be replaced.

• Veneers are usually not covered by dental insurance, because the procedure is considered cosmetic.
