Dandruff is a common problem for people all over the country, but it is also one that is very easy to treat in most cases. There are homeopathic ways to treat dandruff like tea tree oil or even aloe vera oil, but more direct methods are also available. It's possible to treat dandruff with zinc pyrithione shampoos, for example, and they are among the best proven over the counter treatments available.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Zinc pyrithione shampoos (Head and Shoulders, Clinic All Clear and Pantene Pro V, for example)
  • Dandruff fighting conditioners
  1. Step 1

Wet your hair as you normally would in the shower. Use warm water, but not excessively hot. Hot water can contribute to dandruff.

  2. Step 2

Pour shampoo into your palm and work it around in both your hands.

  3. Step 3

Apply the shampoo to your hair with gentle pressure, rubbing it into your scalp evenly and carefully.

  4. Step 4

Massage your scalp until you've worked the shampoo into it thoroughly. Depending on the shampoo you use, you may experience a slight tingling sensation. This is normal.

  5. Step 5

Rinse your hair with the same massaging motion you used to apply the shampoo. Massaging the scalp is important in helping free debris from your hair shafts, as well as from the top of your head.

  6. Step 6

Repeat the process outlined above. This is done for two reasons. First, repeating a shampoo will double the effectiveness of the zinc pyrithione. In addition, washing your hair a second time will help ensure that any residual debris not picked up during the first shampoo is removed.

  7. Step 7

Continue using the zinc pyrithione shampoo for 2 weeks straight without switching brands. This will help you determine whether the shampoo is working, as well as give it ample time to do what it's supposed to.

Tips & Warnings
  • If after more than 2 weeks using zinc pyrithione shampoos you do not see a difference in the presence of dandruff on your scalp, you might want to consider speaking to a physician or dermatologist to see what other options you have available.
  • If after using zinc pyrithione shampoos you still see white flecks and spots at the base of your hair shafts, you may actually have a case of head lice and not dandruff. Try combing vigorously to confirm. If the white spots do not move, then it is most likely lice. Intense itchiness is also a symptom of head lice.
