How to Tip a Hairdresser

After spending 2 hours at the salon, you look like a new person. Now comes that awkward moment ... it's time to pay. If you're wondering if you should tip your hairdresser or how much to give her, consider proper etiquette along with the quality of service you have received.

    Instructions

Give your hairdresser a standard tip of 15 to 20 percent if you are happy with your hair. Whether you are getting a color and cut, a perm or an updo style for a special occasion, a tip is a tangible way of thanking the stylist for making you look great. In addition, a generous tip encourages her to help you out later by fitting you in on a busy Saturday or giving you a free bang trim between appointments.

Tip the shampoo person $3 to $5 if it is someone other than your hairdresser, particularly if he gives you a rejuvenating scalp and neck massage with your shampoo. If you visit a high-end salon, there are often envelopes available at the front desk to designate tip amounts when you pay for hair services. Otherwise, it is acceptable to hand the shampoo person a cash tip before you leave the salon.

Ask your stylist how she would prefer to receive her tip. While a credit card tip won't be turned down, some stylists prefer cash because salons often charge hairdressers a processing fee to process a credit card tip.

Consider the time your stylist has invested in your hair when deciding what to tip. If you only visit him quarterly and he spends 3 to 4 hours washing, coloring, cutting and styling your hair, think 20 to 25 percent rather than 15. Since it doesn't come up that often, you may decide you can afford to be generous.

Don't stress if you don't have cash or if tipping just isn't in your budget this time. Most stylists won't write you off if you don't always tip, but it doesn't hurt to stay in their good graces. Tell her you'll catch her next time, and that you really appreciate the time she spent on your hair.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Don't forget your hairdresser on holidays and special occasions. While it can be difficult to shop for someone you only see every couple of months, specialty websites offer gift ideas for the hard-to-buy-for (see Resources below).

    • Give your hairdresser the best gift of all--the gift of referrals. Many stylists agree that the best compliments they receive are when clients recommend them to others.

    • Don't be stingy. While it may seem like a 20 percent tip is exorbitant when the cut and color is already busting your budget, remember that most hairdressers don't receive health care or disability benefits, and they have to pay for their own supplies. Something as simple as a pair of styling scissors can cost over $100.
