Things You'll Need:
- New exhaust system parts
- Screwdriver
- Jack or hydraulic lift
- Socket wrenches
-
Step 1
Raise the hood of the import car and look for the air intake tube and air box. This is the system that pulls air into the engine. The owner's manual should illustrate its location if you're having trouble finding it on your own.
-
Step 2
Detach the air intake tube from the engine throttle using a screwdriver and pull it free of the engine.
-
Step 3
Unscrew the air box from the chassis and pull it free of the engine.
-
Step 4
Raise the car on a jack or hydraulic lift, allowing you to work on the underbelly of the vehicle safely.
-
Step 5
Feed the lower pipe into place up through the underbelly of the car and into the engine. You should be able to secure it with a screwdriver or socket wrench.
-
Step 6
Connect the free end of the lower pipe to the new air filter and fit it into its designated location. This is usually the fender, but it may be elsewhere, depending on the make and model of vehicle.
-
Step 7
Install the upper pipe into the engine throttle and tighten it into place with a socket wrench or screwdriver.
-
Step 8
Disconnect the stock muffler from the undercarriage of the car with socket wrenches or a screwdriver. You may need to detach the hangers from the chassis of the vehicle as well.
-
Step 9
Slide the new muffler into place. It should fit snugly into the same position; the upgrade you purchase ought to fit the specifications of your vehicle.
-
Step 10
Connect the hangers on the upgrade muffler into place and tighten the bolts connecting it to the catalytic converter pipe.
-
Step 11
Perform a "systems check" by examining the newly installed portions of the exhaust system. You want to make sure all the connections are secured and the seals are all tight.
-
Step 12
Reattach the air box and the air intake tube then lower the car to the ground and close the hood.
