Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Things You’ll Need:
- Security system
- Screwdriver
- Drill
- Wiring diagram of your car
- Voltmeter
Step1
Pick the best spot on your car for the various components of your security system. You generally want to choose spots that do not interfere with the instruments, your vision or your ability to operate the car. Some models specify placement in the trunk of the car, while others are placed under the dash or in areas specifically set aside in the car's design.
Step2
Disconnect the negative terminal on the car battery. Never install an auto security system while the electricity is running.
Step3
Unscrew any coverings or outlets, as dictated by the instructions in your security system manual. You may need to detach a piece of the dashboard or uncover the frame in some specified spot. The details will vary, according to the specific model of the security system.
Step4
Attach the alarm to an inconspicuous spot on the body of the car. Beneath the trunk door is a common location, though the instruction manual may recommend others. Use a screwdriver or a drill to secure the siren.
Step5
Connect the main module of the security system to the spot which you have chosen. Some are designed to be snap-mounted or screwed in, while others must be secured with a drill or bolts. Check your instruction manual for particulars.
Step6
Mount the shock sensor to the location you have chosen for it. It should be somewhere close to the main module, since you will be running wires from one to the other.
Step7
Connect the wiring--the valet switch, the power wire, the starter wire, the LED status indicator, the door lock sensors, the alarm override switch and any other components your alarm has--to the electrical system of the car. Again, particulars vary by make and model, and you should consult a wiring diagram of your specific car before you install the wiring. Check each connection with a voltmeter to determine that it is safe.
Step8
Check your work to make sure that all of the wiring is safely insulated and doesn't dangle anywhere where it might interfere with a driver or passenger.
Step9
Reconnect the battery to the electrical system of the car. Test the features of your security system to make sure they are functioning correctly.
Step10
Reinstall the panels or dashboard components that you removed earlier.
