How to Install Outdoor Sound Systems

When you install an outdoor sound system, you have to take into consideration a number of different factors that don't apply to indoor installations. Interiors are far more controlled than exteriors, so it's important to choose the right sound systems and install them properly for best results.

• Outdoor speakers
• Durable speaker wire
• Volume control box
• Electric drill and bits
• Screwdriver
• Wire tacks
• Caulk

1. Purchase a sound system specifically designed for outdoor use. Speakers must be weather resistant and tested to stand up to harsh weather conditions.

2. Determine where you want to mount your speakers. To get the best life out of your speakers, choose locations that are covered and protected, like under a porch roof.

3. Run durable speaker wire from the sound system outdoors. If possible, run the wire through the wall or along an inconspicuous area.

4. Mount a volume control box to the exterior so that you don't have to go inside to adjust the volume of the exterior speakers.

5. Run the speaker wire through the volume box and each of the speakers.

6. Test the sound system with the speakers in the locations you have chosen to make sure you are getting the sound you want. Walk around the outdoor area to hear how the sound is in different locations. Adjust the speaker location to fill sound voids.

7. Mount the brackets to the locations you have chosen for your outdoor speakers. Drill pilot holes to make it easier to tighten screws. It's best to attach speakers to solid wood or masonry because siding and shingles may not be strong enough to hold them securely.

8. Attach speakers to the mounting brackets.

9. Secure the speaker wire to the floors or walls using wire tacks to prevent it form being pulled.

10. Caulk any holes around the volume control box wiring to prevent moisture buildup.

Tips & Warnings

• Mount speakers as high as you can to get the most sound projection. This will allow you to hear sound at a greater distance.
• When mounting speakers tilt them slightly downwards so that precipitation can drain out.
• Measure how much speaker wire you will need before you buy it, and buy 10 percent more than you think you need. It's better to overestimate what you need than to underestimate what you need.
• Some outdoor sound systems feature weatherproof speakers that can be placed on the ground. These systems are good for use around a pool or other areas that are uncovered. Use speaker wire graded for burial to install these types of sound systems.
