How to Build Pergola Columns From Landscaping Stone

Pergolas are arbors or trellises that consist of overhead structures that support vines or other types of plants. When building a pergola, you will need to find a material for the columns that is solid, attractive and will endure the elements. The use of landscaping stone is a popular solution for building a pergola column.

Things You'll Need

• Shovel
• Sand
• Rebar
• Concrete and concrete pouring supplies
• Wooden braces (optional)
• Mortar and mortar supplies
• Landscaping stone

Instructions

1. Determine the total height of your pergola column, and purchase materials according to your needs. You will need to buy enough landscaping stone, rebar, mortar and concrete to build all 4 pergola columns, along with all of the tools and supplies. Choose landscaping stone that is flat in order to build a more stable pergola column.

2. Measure and mark the precise location of each pergola column, and dig a hole to accommodate the rebar and concrete. Dig a hole that is at least half as deep as the pergola columns are high. For example, is your columns are 8 feet high, you should dig a hole at least 4 feet deep.

3. Fill the bottom of the holes with at least 2 inches of sand. This will help with water drainage and prevent the columns from shifting in the dirt over time.

4. Fill the holes with concrete, and allow the concrete to thicken to the point where you can insert the rebar vertically without the rods falling. The rebar should be cut to a length so that the rods will reach to the top of the column once they are inserted into the bottom of the concrete-filled hole. You may need to support the rebar with wooden braces to keep the rods level and in the right position.

5. Mix your mortar to build the pergola column from landscaping stone. Place the first layer of mortar directly on top of the hardened concrete, and then lay your first level of landscaping stone. Ensure that the mortar is bonding the stone to the rebar as you stack each layer of the column.

6. Alternate the placing of the landscaping stone to add strength to the column. Always place 2 stones on top of 1, and 1 stone on top of 2, using a level to keep the column straight.

• Since a pergola is an overhead structure, you will probably need to consult with a local building inspector and obtain the right permits to build your columns from landscaping stones. Check with your local zoning authority to follow the proper procedures.
