Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
Step1
Use stone to build a cold frame wall by finding suitable covers for the frame itself. A discarded storm window makes an ideal cold cover, but you can build covers with a variety of scrap materials or by visiting a local home improvement center. The most important features of a cold frame are a see-through top so that sunlight can enter and a rigid frame to keep out excessive cold and wind.
Step2
Choose a suitable location to build your cold frame wall. You will need an area that has complete exposure to sunlight during the day and is close to a building or structure that can offer heat during the night. Avoid shady areas or locations that are susceptible to wind or water.
Step3
Find the right stones to build your cold frame wall. The size and amount of stones will depend upon the size of the frame covers you have chosen and the amount of seedlings you want to prepare. You will need to use a combination of large and small stones, since larger stones can absorb more heat during the day, and smaller stones are more effective at filling up cracks and empty spaces.
Step4
Build the stone wall so that the cold frame covers will fit snugly on top. You should make the wall slightly lower in the front so that the cold frames will tilt toward the sun during the day.
Step5
Fill the inside of the wall with dirt and compost, ensuring that the enclosure is relatively water-tight and free from excessive leakage. You may want to line the inside of the wall with a layer of peat moss before you start adding the dirt, which will aid with proper drainage.
Step6
Set the cold frames onto the stone wall, and adjust for the best fit. Use more dirt or compost along the top of the wall to smooth out the tops of the stones for a more even fit.
