Building sand sculptures can be a fun family activity at the beach or an easy way to display sculpting prowess. It takes very little to build a sand sculpture and if the project does not appear as planned, there is no difficulty in starting again.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Collect your tools. You will need to have a shovel, a bucket and a spray bottle. You can also use any item from your kitchen as additional tools to build your sand sculpture.
Step2
Look for the best sand. Sand that is too dry will cause your sculpture to crumble easily. To test the sand, squeeze a fistful of it then release and roll it on the ground. If the sand ball does not crumble then it will work well for your sculpture.
Step3
Pick your location. Set up your sculpture site at a point that is uphill from the high tide line. You should be close enough to the water to get some easily but not near enough to have your sculpture washed away by the tide.
Step4
Make your foundation. Your foundation has to be wet in order to form a strong base for your sculpture. Dig with your shovel until you find wet sand.
Step5
Use your hands to scoop out the wet sand and widen your foundation. You will use this sand to build your sculpture.
Step6
Create a rough structure with molds. Place a bottomless box on a flat part of your foundation and alternately fill it with sand and water. Tamp the sand down to flatten it.
Step7
Tap the base of the box to release it and then slowly pull it off the block of sand. Use other containers to create more molds on top of this block. Use smaller containers to form molds for smaller parts of your sculpture, like turrets and signposts.
Step8
Begin to carve your sculpture from the top and work your way down. Use your tools to gently carve out the sand in the mounds to create lines and shapes in your structure. Add more sand as you need it.
Step9
Spray your sculpture with water as you build. This will help keep your sculpture moist and prevent it from crumbling.

Tips & Warnings

  • The high tide line is the point at which the dark, wet sand turns to loose, white sand.
  • Remove an equal amount of sand all around your sculpture. If you remove too much sand from one side you structure will collapse.
