Step 1
Determine how extravagant the installation will be. In smaller cars, simply plugging in the portable DVD player is enough of an installation. For minivans, SUVs and conversion vehicles, additional monitors will be required, as well as an acceptable sound system.

Step 2
Figure out how to mount the DVD player into the car. Many portable DVD players can be installed by mounting them on a bracket, such as the Digital Innovations MoGo portable DVD player mount, which can fit any portable DVD player with up to a 10-inch screen. Invest in sun visor monitors in smaller automobiles or if no children will be traveling in the car. Sun visor monitors are usually sold separately, although some websites may sell both left and right monitors as a pair (see Resources below). Sun visor monitors, such as the Pyle PLVS7BK usually have a 7-inch screen, although the Shenzhen IC-1202 sun visor monitor has a 12.2-inch screen.

Install headrest monitors into a car for passengers to enjoy. Most headrest monitors come with their own mounting brackets. Those that don't can be attached to the headrest with the Pyle PLVBR Universal Headrest Mounting Kit. Boss, Pyle and Lanzar are the biggest names in headrest monitor producers, and they produce headrest monitors that have a 6 to 7-inch screen size.

Install a flip-down monitor into vehicles with the necessary roof space, such as a minivan or SUV. Most flip-down monitors vary in screen size from 7 to 13 inches, such as the Legacy LMR1344. Among the best options for a flip-down monitor are a remote control and an adjustable mount for times when the backseat is not completely occupied.

Step 6
Buy as many headphones as there are passengers. Purchase a stereo splitter cable if necessary in order to accommodate all the passengers watching the DVD. While most monitors provide their own sound, headphones can reduce the distraction to the driver of the car.
