Visual voicemail is an exciting feature of the iPhone, and some other similar phone devices, that allows you to view a list of voicemail messages and select which message you would like to listen to first. This differs from traditional voicemail where the user is required to listen to the messages in the order they have been received. One of the best parts about the iPhone's visual voicemail feature is how easy it is to set up and use.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Set up your visual voicemail by tapping on the "Voicemail" icon on the main menu of the iPhone. If this is your first time using the voicemail application, you will be asked to create a password using the keypad. Choose a password that will be easy to remember and type on the iPhone's touchpad.

  2. Step 2

Record your visual voicemail greeting by tapping on the "Voicemail" icon then tapping the "Greeting" icon on the menu that appears. Next, tap "Custom," and when you are ready to record the message, tap "Record" and say the message you would like to use as your greeting. When you are finished with the message, tap "Save" to store and begin using it as your voicemail greeting.

  3. Step 3

Check your voicemail messages by viewing the main screen in the voicemail application. Any messages that you have not yet listened to will have a blue dot displayed next to them. To listen, simply tap on the message itself and it will play.

  4. Step 4

Pause visual voicemail messages as they are playing by tapping on the "Pause" icon and tapping "Play" to resume playing the message. You can also rewind or skip to a specific point in the message by dragging the small button along the playback bar that appears at the bottom of the screen as you listen. This may be helpful when you need to hear a specific part of a message again, such as a phone number someone mentions in a voicemail.

  5. Step 5

Delete visual voicemail messages by tapping on the message and then tapping "Delete." Deleted messages are automatically saved on the iPhone for a few days before they are permanently deleted. You can retrieve deleted messages and send them back to the main voicemail list by tapping on the "Deleted Messages" that appears at the end of your list of voicemails, tapping the message you would like to save, and then tapping "Undelete."

Tips & Warnings
  • If you would rather not record your own visual voicemail greeting, you can set your iPhone to use a default system message. If your callers reach your voicemail, they will hear a brief message stating your phone number. To use this default message, tap "Greeting" on the main menu and tap "Default."
  • Listen to your voicemail from another phone by dialing your remote access voicemail number, which is provided by AT&T when you open your account.
