Researchers are documenting how we benefit emotionally and physically from nature.

To combat the negative effects of stress-filled lifestyle, researchers in the field of architecture, environmental psychology and other sciences are pointing to natural solutions. Studies have shown that the human animal benefits from exposure to nature in several ways. Recent reports have shown that the body and mind can be enhanced by exposure to sunlight, views of nature and walks in the outdoors.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer with Internet access
  • Potted plants
  1. Step 1

Consider the natural resources in your neighborhood. Are you near a park, a lake, an ocean or a forest? Schedule time each week for a walk or visit to the nearest natural area. You may want to ride a bike or hike to the destination.

  2. Step 2

Bring the outdoors inside to your home or office in the form of potted plants to foster good health. Not only do many plants clean indoor air, studies have shown that employees feel more relaxed with plants around the office.

  3. Step 3

Spend at least 30 minutes in the sunlight if possible. Research has shown that even 10 minutes of daily exposure to the sun encourages the development of vitamin D. An article in the February 2005 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute reported that “evidence is beginning to emerge that sunlight exposure, particularly as it relates to the vitamin D synthesized in the skin under the influence of solar radiation, might have a beneficial influence for certain cancers.”

  4. Step 4

Spend as much time as possible near the water. An article in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine suggests humans naturally seek out homes near the water, with some vegetation and open land. Such a setting provides for relaxation and less stress. For more information, see the list of Resources below.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ultraviolet radiation from the sun is our main source of vitamin D, needed for bones, muscles and the immune system. Sunlight also stimulates the pineal gland in the brain to produce chemicals that improve our mood.
  • Excessive exposure to the sun is still a major cause of skin cancer. Use a sunscreen or other protection.
