Wanna be a rock star? You don't have to possess massive talent, or be part of a notable band. You can sing live-band, heavy-metal karaoke at many different bars and venues around the country. All it takes is a cover charge and the courage to perform in front of a crowd. If you want to put on a good show, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Some vocal music ability
  • Courage
  1. Step 1

Find a venue near you that offers live-band, heavy-metal karaoke. Atlanta, Georgia, for instance, has shows three times a week at a venue called 10 High in the Virginia-Highland neighborhood.

  2. Step 2

Arrive early. Often there is a line of people who want to sing along with the band, and if you get to the bar late you may miss the chance to sign up. Try to have a song in mind before you get there, to save time during the sign-up process. Practicing ahead of time isn't mandatory but can help when facing your audience.

  3. Step 3

Have fun. Many a vocal mistake has been forgiven by strong stage performance. Dance, interact with the musicians and engage the crowd. Consider putting the microphone in the mic stand, if one is provided, to leave your hands free for rock gesturing like the devil's horns and pumped fists.

  4. Step 4

Don't hold the microphone too far from your face—it should be no further than about a thumb's length from your mouth. Don't cover the head of the microphone with your hand.

  5. Step 5

The words to the song should scroll on a screen in front of you. If you get lost, just look and see which words are being highlighted, and catch up again. Most likely your audience will have been drinking a little bit, so they won't be too hard on you if you crash and burn.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't jump on stage uninvited when it isn't your turn. Because these are live bands, they most likely have security personnel who will escort you off stage and, possibly, off the premises.
  • Try to pick a song that feels comfortable, vocally. If you have a low voice, don't pick a rock song with a high wail.
  • Bring friends along for a built-in cheering squad.
