Do you have too many folders in your email? Feeling like your computer is all junked up? Well the first place to begin is to delete unnecessary folders from your email. Those folders that contain information no longer needed in particular should be the first to go. This article is going to teach you how to permanently remove the contents of your trash as well.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First you must empty the messages in the folder you want to delete. Do this by opening the folder which contains the messages.

  2. Step 2

Place a check mark in the box to the left of the message you want to delete. Delete each message individually which will send them to the trash. To select all messages, just click the "check all" link at the bottom of the page.

  3. Step 3

Click "delete" to have all the messages you chose transferred into the trash bin (folder).

  4. Step 4

Do this over and over in each folder you wish to delete. You cannot delete a folder until you have emptied that folder of all the messages it held. This is true for Yahoo! email accounts, but if you have Hotmail you can just right-click the folder you want to delete and remove it right away with all email still in there.

  5. Step 5

Once the folders are all emptied of messages, you are now ready to delete those folders. Click the "Folders" link on the left navigation bar.

  6. Step 6

On the "folders" screen, find the folders you would like to delete and click the "delete" link located to the right of the folder's name. The name of the folder will then disappear from the list of folders.

  7. Step 7

To permanently remove the contents of the trash, click the "empty" link next to the trash folder in the left navigation bar.

  8. Step 8

You will receive a prompt asking if you are sure you want to delete all messages from the trash. Click "yes" to delete or "no" to return to the previous page. This gives you the opportunity to make sure you are not deleting anything you don't want to accidentally.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember that you cannot delete a Yahoo! email folder without emptying its contents first.
  • You cannot remove or rename the permanent folders in your email account. These folders include "inbox" "sent" "draft" and "trash".
