Many women and children are attacked every year. Self defense has become more and more popular in the United States because of women seeking out these skills in order to avoid an attack. While regular training in a Martial Arts is ideal for self defense, there are some things you can do right now that can help you make an attacker run.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging
Step1
Fake it until you make it. Even if you are not confident, you must show the world that you are. If you do this on a regular basis, you just might start to believe in yourself!

Start with your posture. Sit and stand straight, and always look forward (not down) when you walk. Simply showing confidence can help you avoid an attack. If a potential attacker senses confidence in you he or she may assume that you will be more likely to fight back than someone who shows little or no confidence.
Step2
Attackers look for potential victims before they attack. The first thing they will look for is low confidence. However, the key in a good victim is distraction. If you don't see the attack coming that is better for the attacker.
Step3
Avoid distraction. Do not listen to anything while you are out. Save the music and headphones for home. Other distractions include cell phones. Do not talk on your cell phone while walking. Just check your voice mail later and call back.
Step4
This brings us to the most important part of avoiding an attack: awareness. You need to be aware of where you are, what the people around you are doing and if anything suspicious is happening. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. This is at the very core of self protection.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be cautious of using weapons. If you want to and it is legal learn how to properly use and carry that weapon first. This is for your own safety.

on 5/22/2008 Good article - confidence is key. Also watch how you dress - shoes and clothes that are hard to run in, bags that bog down your arms or hands, ponytails and buns that are easy to grab and hold you with, etc. also make you an easy target. Look for 'How to dress to avoid assault' on here for some more ideas.
