Step 1
Get to know MARTA. It stands for Moving Atlantans Rapidly Through Atlanta--not really. But it is Atlanta's only public transportation system and it'll get you from the airport to downtown cheaper and quicker than any other mode of transportation.
-
Step 2
Cheap accommodations in Atlanta. Unless you go outside the city center or have a friend to put you up it's hard to find cheap accommodations in Atlanta. Anything else you get will have lots of "local flavor," so if you're not open to this, be prepared to shell out some bucks.
-
Step 3
Cheap eats in Atlanta. Unfortunately, downtown Atlanta is unlike most other major cities in that it doesn't have a 24-hour-a-day kind of culture. Street life is geared towards business and tourists during the day. There are lots of conventions and sporting events, but if you're just looking for a quick bite at an off-hour, you're out of luck. It's not until you get out of the immediate downtown area that you start finding those kinds of places--the ones without the chain logos.
-
Step 4
The Atlanta City Pass. Check out the link below for this. If you don't want to visit 3 or more destinations the pass provides, don't buy it. If you do, it's worth it.

What exactly does this mean? Also, what is this "local flavor" that you speak of?
To answer your questions, Rachelle, about history I point to my first paragraph--the Sherman references on how Atlantan's are more concerned with progress than history. And concerning the "local flavor," you get what you pay for. The flea-bag on Ponce might be cheap but it will come with a lot of character.
