1
Get some experience. Play open mic nights, amateur gigs and talent shows. Whatever feels right for you as there are plenty of opportunities available, and most take little research and time investment to locate.
-
2
Use your own instruments. Many open mic nights provide equipment for you. Bring as much of your own equipment as you're allowed. Because you are familiar with your equipment, it's more likely you'll be more comfortable during the gig.

Make friends with as many people working the venue as you can, such as the sound person, the mixer, the club owner and even security. Doing so will make you feel like you've got others supporting and rooting for you if you know no one else at the venue. This may also help them make you feel more at home and provide you a greater sense of belonging while you perform.

Draw a circle around yourself on stage. Make it three feet in diameter. This imaginary circle moves with you wherever you go. Inside this circle imagine it's just you with your dream of performing like you originally had standing in front of your bedroom mirror. Don't let anyone mess with this space. Remain within your circle. If you're having fun, so is the audience.
