Some of the most beautiful paintings are those of sunrises. Have you ever sat on your porch, watching the sunrise and thought to yourself, "I wish I could paint that?" It's not an easy task, but eHow will show you how.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Acrylic paint (black, white, blue, red, orange, yellow)
  • Paint brushes
  • A canvas
  • Water
  1. Step 1

Paint two inches of the sky a dark blue. To do this, mix your black and blue paints together.

  2. Step 2

As you descend down the canvas, paint the sky lighter and lighter. The blue eventually needs to fade into a bright yellow right at the horizon, so add a bit of white every half inch or so as you paint strips of blue down the sky. Use your water to mix the paints so it truly looks like it's fading.

  3. Step 3

Once your blue turns almost white, start adding in yellow. Add less and less white to the yellow as you go down to the horizon so the yellow gets brighter and brighter.

  4. Step 4

Let the background dry. Once it's dry, start adding in your clouds. Take a look at actual sunrises or pictures of sunrises to see what they look like. Some will be bright reds, some will be pink and yellow. Some will be a bright purple.

  5. Step 5

Once you decide what you want your clouds to look like, paint them in, using light strokes, with a different brush than you used to paint the sky. Your new brush should be smaller and look more like a brush used to apply makeup. To make the clouds look even better, take your original color and add a little white to it to lighten the color, and apply it on the edges of the cloud to show the effect of the light coming through.

Tips & Warnings
  • As with any art, the key is practice, practice, practice. Your first attempt may not be wonderful, but the more you work at it, the better it will get.
  • For beginning painters, refer to a picture when you're painting. Observe the colors and how they change.
  • Acrylic paint is one of the more forgiving paint mediums. If you make a mistake, it is easy to cover it up.
