Steam cooking is an easy method for cooking a wide variety of foods from chicken to vegetables to fish. To steam cook food in your own kitchen, you will need to get the appropriate materials. Here's what you need in your kitchen to steam cook foods.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Purchase a steam pot. Pots used for steaming typically come with a tight-fitting lid and a metal steaming insert. A tight fitting lid is crucial so steam does not escape from the steam pot, slowing down the cooking process. The steaming insert holds the food during steaming, and it should fit tightly in the steam pot.

  2. Step 2

Use a bamboo steamer for steam cooking. A bamboo steamer can have one tier for steaming, or it can have several tiers to allow you to steam multiple foods at the same time. Make sure that the bamboo steamer has a tight fitting lid and that you have a large enough pot to hold the bamboo steamer during the steam cooking. Try using your wok for steaming foods in your bamboo steamer.

  3. Step 3

Consider obtaining a steaming insert for a pot that you already own. If you don't wish to purchase a steam pot set or a bamboo steamer, you can use a pot that you already have in your kitchen, as long as you purchase a steaming insert. Some steaming inserts are expandable and fit a variety of pot sizes. Make sure that the steaming insert that you select will fit the pot that you wish to use for steam cooking.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some steam pots come with an extra steam insert for use in double steaming. Use double steaming to steam 2 kinds of foods in 1 pot at the same time, such as a meat and a vegetable.
  • If you don't have any inserts for steaming, you can always use a metal colander. Make sure that the colander will fit inside one of your cooking pots, however.
