Reflexology is a type of Shiatsu massage that focuses on the feet. Parts of the feet correlate to different parts of the body and by stimulating points on the feet with a massage technique, the therapist can cause changes in the body. Reflexology massages are becoming more popular, especially as they may boost immunity.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check with your care provider before getting this massage technique. They may not recommend it or they may want you to share specific information about your health conditions with your massage therapist before the massage is begun.

  2. Step 2

Talk extensively with your massage therapist before the massage about illnesses, medications and injuries. Let them know of chronic conditions, chronic pain and conditions such as pregnancy. There are some conditions where the therapist needs to avoid some points or the condition may become worse. The more information your massage therapist has, the better they can treat you.

  3. Step 3

Choose a massage therapist trained in reflexology. Ask for references and certification. Some states have requirements for licensing massage therapists; others have none.

  4. Step 4

Avoid eating 1 hour before your treatment. Drinking some water though, is fine. After your treatment, plan on drinking lots of water.

  5. Step 5

Plan on wearing loose, comfortable clothing when getting your reflexology massage. You will be lying down, but you only remove your shoes and socks.
