Whether you are a professional or one of many beginners just learning how to bowl across the country, how you hold the bowling ball is of primary importance. Here are some tips on how to pick a conventional bowling ball grip next time you are at the lanes.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Find a bowling ball that is the appropriate weight for you. Beginners to professionals all have to figure this out before bowling. There is no right answer, just what ball feels right to you. Think of a ball that you can bowl 20 times over the course of a game without feeling tired. Also it should be noted that the heavier the ball, the farther apart the holes on the ball, as bowling alleys reckon that people with larger hands are using them.

  2. Step 2

Slide your thumb into the bottom hole and your middle and ring finger into the top holes. The bowling grip should go to the second knuckle on your hand. Also make sure there is no friction with your fingers in the holes. You don't want the ball to get "stuck" on your hand as you try and bowl. Conversely make sure the holes are not too loose, as the ball will slip when you start to bowl.

  3. Step 3

Spread your index finger and pinky on either side of the holes for balance. This will help guide the ball and make sure it goes straight upon your release.

Tips & Warnings
  • As you and your friends move away from being beginners and start watching professionals, you'll learn that there are many variations on a bowling grip and release. Stick with the conventional grip until you've mastered the general bowling motion.
  • Some bowlers wear bowling gloves. This not only helps keep the wrist straight, but helps grip the ball which can get slippery from lane oil.
