The cartwheel, one of the first stunts a young gymnast learns, is the basis for tumbling skills in all gymnastic levels. When teaching preschoolers, consider their muscle tone. Many small children will need to develop arm and wrist muscles in order to perform the stunt. When you're ready to teach the cartwheel, some simple guidelines will make it easier.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use a soft mat or padded carpet when teaching stunts. Preschoolers are developing their balance and falls will occur. Spring floors, designed specifically for gymnastics, are the preferred surface.

  2. Step 2

Tape a straight line across the mat to illustrate that a cartwheel follows a straight pattern. The children will practice their cartwheels on this line. Alternately, place colorful handprints and footprints in a straight-line pattern to illustrate where each hand and foot should land.

  3. Step 3

Spot behind the child when teaching a cartwheel. Kneel on the mat, just behind the line. As the child puts her hands down on the mat, grab the back of her waist and help her bring her feet over her head.

  4. Step 4

Support the child's weight as she put her feet down in the correct position on the line. As soon as the gymnast understands the movement, allow her to practice the cartwheel by herself.

  5. Step 5

Teach a preschooler to raise her hands up over her head as soon as she completes the cartwheel. This helps her develop balance and prepares her for the next tumbling move. Gymnasts in competition finish every tumbling run with their arms stretched upwards, hands turned out.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use patience when teaching gymnastics to preschoolers. Encourage the child and use positive reinforcement when you see progress.
