How to Part Hair for Color Retouches

Getting the color evenly distributed throughout your hair—especially when you're touching up roots—is one of the more challenging parts of coloring your hair at home. If you part your hair into sections and work methodically through each one, though, you won't have any tell-tale roots after you retouch your hair.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Rattail comb
  • Hair clips
  1. Step 1

Part your hair down the center from the middle of your forehead to the nape of your neck using the rattail comb. If your part doesn't fall in the center of your head, you may want to use your natural part, since these are the roots that are more likely to show.

  2. Step 2

Comb one side of your parted hair. Lightly twist it and clip it to make sure you don't lose the part. Comb, twist and clip the other side. Check to make sure all of your hair is clearly on one side or the other.

  3. Step 3

Unclip one section of your hair. Use the comb to part it from your crown to just behind your ear. If your hairstyle has a pronounced part either before or after this point on your head, use that part instead.

  4. Step 4

Twist and clip each of the 2 sections of hair you just created, starting with the front section. This time, make sure that the roots at the part are fully exposed and ready for retouching.

  5. Step 5

Repeat Steps 3 and 4 with the other side of your hair. However, this time, just clip the front section because you'll start by applying hair color to one back section of hair.
