House painting can transform the inside and outside of your home in a inexpensive and quick way. With the right tools and a weekend, any home owner can paint the inside and outside of their home, just as the professionals would. Before you can start this project, though, you need to buy the right painting tools.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make a general list of the areas you are painting to get a feel for the amount of painting supplies you need. While the supplies are mostly the same for interior and exterior, you need a separate set of brushes, rollers, roller nets, painting pans and buckets for each color of paint. You also need enough drop cloths to cover each area.

  2. Step 2

Consider the prep work you will need to do. Add to your list a putty knife, some dusters or dust rags, a flex blade, spackle, caulking gun and caulk. These will be used for scraping chipped paint, fixing blemishes in the walls or other surfaces, and dusting grit off before painting.

  3. Step 3

Decide how much of each paint color you will need. You will need to determine this by calculating the square feet of the areas you are painting for each color. Also, consider if you will be doing more than one coat and figure in a little extra for mistakes. Use the same method for the areas where you'll need primer.

Tips & Warnings
  • For interior painting, use finer bristled brushes. For exterior painting, use rougher brushes, as it helps the paint last longer.
