Organizing a home, or even a single room, starts with the simple step of getting the appropriate supplies. These supplies are not hard to find, but making sure that you have and use them all will save you a lot of time and make your organizing project more efficient.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Trash bags
  • Boxes
  • Sticky notes
  • Marker
  • Zipper bags
  • Tape measure
  • Cleaning supplies (optional)
  1. Step 1

Purchase trash bags to use for throwing away broken items or things that you don't need that you aren't going to donate to someone else. Also, use trash bags to get rid of obvious trash such as paper scraps, empty bottles or outdated items.

  2. Step 2

Obtain boxes to aid you in organizing your home. Boxes are essential when organizing a home because they enable you to quickly sort like items. You will likely have many boxes when organizing your home, including a box for each category of items you wish to keep.

  3. Step 3

Prepare a box labeled "donate" for items that you wish to donate to a charity or give away to a friend or relative and a box labeled "new home." Use the "new home" box for items that you need to move to another place in your home or garage.

  4. Step 4

Use a sticky note and a marker to clearly label the boxes that you will use to help you organize your home. These labels are essential for quickly sorting your items into the appropriate boxes.

  5. Step 5

Consider using zipper bags of various sizes to help you further sort smaller items. You can use small zipper bags to help you temporarily contain small items such as buttons or coins. Use larger zipper bags to hold slightly larger items such as makeup brushes or even receipts.

  6. Step 6

Get a tape measure and find out the measurements of the spaces for your storage boxes before you go out and purchase storage containers for your sorted items. You need to measure exactly how much space you actually have. It can be frustrating, and a waste of money, to purchase a storage container for your items only to find that it won't fit in its intended space. Save yourself time in the end and measure your spaces first.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the area being organized is dirty, then it's a good idea to clean it before you put your newly sorted items back in place. Cleaning solutions, sponges and rubber gloves can help you clean your spaces.
