When beginning skaters take the time to learn the 1-foot glide properly, they build a solid foundation for more difficult tricks. Getting a hang of the 1-foot glide is one of the first things you will learn before you move forward with your skating lessons.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stand on the ice with both feet together.

  2. Step 2

Focus on keeping your body in the proper position. Stretch our arms out at your sides and keep your body straight and stiff. This is the most challenging part of the technique.

  3. Step 3

Practice lifting your left blade to your right knee and holding this position. Just continue to stand and focus on your balance and body position before you try skating. Repeat the process with the other foot.

  4. Step 4

Put the steps together and begin to skate. Push off with your left leg and bring your left skate to your right knee.

  5. Step 5

Glide on your right blade for 3 counts and then return your left blade to the ice. Shift your weight from your right leg to your left leg.

  6. Step 6

Push off with your right leg, and lift your right skate to your left knee for 3 counts. Practice the one skate glide skating both forward and backward until you've mastered the skill and can do it easily at any speed.
