Nothing is worse than to return to a car and see the keys dangling in the ignition and the car locked. For different types of cars, different tools exist that can gain entrance to a locked vehicle. For older types with the upright locking button by the window or one of the newer ones with similar retro style, a lasso tool can do the trick.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Air wedge
  • Lasso tool
  1. Step 1

Stick an air wedge into the side of the car door. This device has a bulb like a blood pressure monitor that you squeeze to air up an inflatable bladder.

  2. Step 2

Open a crack in the door with the air wedge, making the opening large enough for the lasso tool. The lasso tool is a long flexible tube that contains a slim wire or rope with a loop on the end.

  3. Step 3

Slip the lasso tool through the opening and work it past the weather stripping. Slide it down until the loop goes over the locked button.

  4. Step 4

Lasso the button and pull the loop closed by pulling the string or wire through the tube. Some models have a button on the end of the tube.

  5. Step 5

Hold on to the tool, pull the tool up and unlock the car.

Tips & Warnings
  • Modern cars are built with extremely tight weatherstripping, making it difficult to get the lasso tool into a locked vehicle. The air wedge is designed to ease the lasso in without scratching the finish on the door.
