Landboarding with a kite is one of those "just for the thrill" type of sports. It looks so carefree, but actually it takes some practice and skill to learn how to get the kite up in the air so you can landboard. Use the following steps to get you started on landboarding or kiteboarding, by getting that kite up in the air flying high.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Kite
  • Landboard or kiteboard
  • Harness
  • Bridle lines and handle bars
  1. Step 1

Spread your kite out on the ground to check that it's secured to the lines, bridles and handles. You may have to weigh it down with some rocks. The edge with the air pockets will be at the top and the actual underneath side of the kite will be facing up on the ground.

  2. Step 2

Stretch out the length of the lines, check your handle bar attachment and make sure that your safety harness is on securely.

  3. Step 3

Practice your first lift-offs into the air without the landboard. You may have to practice many times to get used to operating the bridle lines to turn the kite according to the winds. You will more or less just be running with the kite at this point. It is a good idea to do your first attempts on a less windy day. The landboards really take off in extreme wind, so pick your practice days according to the wind velocity.

  4. Step 4

Work the landboard into your practice runs. As you gain more confidence, attempt to landboard on days with more and more wind. Stretch out your kite, the lines and prepare your harness just as you did in Steps 1 and 2, but this time, stand on the landboard and get ready to roll.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take lessons from a landboarding instructor to learn all the "ups and downs" of landboarding.
  • Be aware of the level of the ground and type of ground whenever you are landboarding, especially if you are just starting out, to avoid injuries due to hitting rocks or trees.
