A beginning step in many swim programs is to help a person rollover in the water. This enables the person to float on his back and breathe while not having to struggle to swim. This safety measure is a prerequisite for many swimming schools. Teach your loved one how to rollover and breathe without difficulty.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Place the child in the water and ask him to begin swimming face down. Comfort the child and let them know that you are right there if they need you. Children should begin to swim in a straight line. The adult should remain at the child's side at all times.

  2. Step 2

Count to 7 and then begin the rollover breath technique. Place one of your hands on the child's head and push downward. Place your other hand on the child's shoulder and pull the shoulder up and over. The child will then be on his back. Keep one hand under the child's head until he is floating on his own.

  3. Step 3

Return the child to the face down swim position. Count to 5 and repeat the rollover breath technique from Step 2. Press the head down and flip the child's body with the opposite hand.

  4. Step 4

Return the child to the face down swimming position and ask her to swim. Count to 3 and then repeat the rollover breath technique from Step 2. Stay close to the child because by this step the child is beginning to get tired. Reaffirm that you are there and you will help her.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep a calm voice throughout all the steps to reaffirm to the child that there is no danger.
