Step 1
Place your child in a current in the pool and release them to start swimming. These currents can be found on the sides of most pools, where fresh water is constantly being put in the pool. This current will not only support your child but also give them confidence to swim.
-
Step 2
Allow the child to swim for 3 seconds then gently pop the child out of the water by placing 2 fingers on their chest. Instinctively, the child will take a deep breathe of air as soon as they are popped out of the water. As soon as this is done, let go of the child so they can continue swimming.
-
Step 3
Repeat the pop-up process when the child has been swimming for 7 seconds. After continuing to swim for 5 more seconds, do the pop-up breathing exercise, and then again when the child swims 3 more seconds.
-
Step 4
Remove the child from the water after this cycle. As you continually practice this breathing exercise with your child, they will become better swimmers and will eventually be able to pop-up breathe on their own.
-
Step 5
Continue this exercise until your child can do it on their own.
