So many different types of toothbrushes are available on the market, and it can be difficult choosing the right one for you. Make your choice carefully since a toothbrush is a crucial tool to fight dental diseases like gum disorders and cavities.

From Quick Guide: Dental Disorders
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine if you want an automatic (electric or battery powered) toothbrush or a manual toothbrush.

  2. Step 2

See if you can find a toothbrush with a timer in it if you choose to purchase an automatic toothbrush. You should brush your teeth for 2 minutes, and a timer will help make sure you're brushing long enough.

  3. Step 3

Take a close look at the brush head size, regardless of your choice of toothbrush. Find a brush head that will easily fit in the back of your mouth. While you obviously can't try out the brush in the store to see how it fits, you can get the right sized one by being aware of the size of your mouth. If in doubt, always choose a brush head that's smaller.

  4. Step 4

Hold the toothbrush to see how it fits in your hand. You'll want one that fits comfortably.

  5. Step 5

Choose a soft bristle. While there are stronger bristle strengths available, a soft bristle is gentler to your gums.

Tips & Warnings
  • Regardless of what type of toothbrush you choose, always replace the brush or the head when the bristles get worn. Worn bristles won't clean your teeth as effectively.
  • Learn how to properly brush your teeth; consult your dentist. It doesn't matter how great a toothbrush you have if you don't know the correct way to use it.
  • A more expensive toothbrush doesn't necessarily mean a better quality one.
