You may be using a tool or driving a car when you notice pain or numbness in your hands and fingers. If you are suddenly awakened at night by a tingling hand and pain radiating from your wrist, chances are good you have carpal tunnel syndrome. Here are some ways you can remedy the pain.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take frequent rest breaks while doing repetitive motion work with your hands, or stop what you are doing that is causing the carpal tunnel syndrome. Talk to your manager to see if some accommodation can be made.

  2. Step 2

See your doctor for a diagnosis if wrist pain is interfering with your normal activities, such as working or sleeping. Nerve damage can result from severe cases left untreated.

  3. Step 3

Exercise wrists by rotating them for 10 minutes twice a day.

  4. Step 4

Wear a wrist brace or splint while working or sleeping. Use plenty of pillows under your head and shoulders at night to keep from cutting off blood circulation to your hands.

  5. Step 5

Take aspirin or other over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs to relieve mild pain. Taking a good multi-vitamin or just supplementing your diet with Vitamin B6 may help remedy carpal tunnel syndrome.

  6. Step 6

Use an ice pack or place ice cubes in a towel and apply to the affected wrist to relieve swelling and pain.

  7. Step 7

Discuss carpal tunnel release surgery with your physician if your symptoms are severe and persistent.
