Open Pores

Before applying any acne remedy, it is important that you open the pores as much as possible to increase the penetration of your treatment. Opening pores also makes regular face washing more effective. The best way to open your pores is with a facial steam, which is fast and easy to perform at home, and doesn't require any special equipment.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Medium sized sauce pan
    • Pot holder
    • Essential oils and/or herbs
    • Large towel
      • 1

Fill a medium sized sauce pan with water. Bring the water to a boil and remove from heat. At this point it is important that you move quickly so that the water does not cool too much, so make sure everything else is prepared ahead of time.

      • 2

Set the pan in a location where you can easily and comfortably place your head 1 to 2 feet above the surface of the water. If you are comfortable standing, that will work fine. Otherwise, you may want to set the pan on a pot holder at your kitchen table so that you can sit and lean over the pan.

      • 3

Place any essential oils or herbs you may like in the water at this time. Eucalyptus will help clear the sinuses and open the pores, chamomile is relaxing and lavender is said to help with depression. Choose any oil or herb you like, using about 5 drops of oil or 1 tsp. of fresh or dried herbs.

Lean over the pot and drape a large towel over the your head and around the edges of the pot. The towel should be large enough that you can keep your face a comfortable distance from the pan with no holes where the steam can escape.

      • 5

Breathe deeply and relax for about 10 minutes, allowing the steam to open your pores and sinuses. Once complete, you can simply wash your face with your favorite product and warm water, or apply your acne treatment.
