Step 1
Choose the hemp or twine for your jewelry. There are a wide variety of selections out there. If you want a bracelet that is durable and yet not too scratchy, look for hemp that has few fibers or "bung" that stick out. Polished or wax hemp is available, and it scratches the least.
-
Step 2
Set up a workstation. You can hammer a nail into a piece of scrap lumber or you can find a small stationary post no bigger than an ink pen to hold your work.
-
Step 3
Cut two pieces of hemp several inches longer than the piece of jewelry. These are the two base pieces and the spiral knot forms around them. Cut two more pieces of hemp five or six times longer than the base pieces for the knotting threads.
-
Step 4
Measure three or four inches from one end of all four threads. Tie a knot. Loop this knot over the nail. Separate out the four strands. Put one long piece on the outside left, one long piece on the outside right and the two shorter base pieces in the middle.
-
Step 5
Take the outside right strand. Pull out a couple inches to the right side to make a loop. Lay the end of the right strand over the base threads.
-
Step 6
Move the left strand up and over the right strand. Cross the lowest portion of the loop diagonally with the left strand. Run that end through the loop on the right side and pull the knot tight to complete one knot.
-
Step 7
Repeat Step 6 until the bracelet is the correct length. As you work, the spiral forms. Tighten the knots the same for an even appearance. Tie a knot as you did in Step 4 to finish making the bracelet.
