Adding beads into hemp jewelry may appear a little complicated, but there are some basic things you can do to achieve a polished beaded look with hemp. Here's how to properly add a second bead to a square knot hemp jewelry bracelet.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Release the middle hemp strands (carrier strands) from where they are secured.

  2. Step 2

Trim carrier ends about a quarter inch from the end. Make sure to cut in a straight line across the two or more carrier strands. Using beeswax, coat the tips of carrier strands so they can thread through a bead more easily.

  3. Step 3

String your bead. If possible string the bead on both strands. Depending on the size of the hole of the bead you may have to use just one carrier strand.

  4. Step 4

Secure the second bead in place. Tie the first part of your square knot using the two outside strands, and the carrier strands that have just been strung with the bead. If you are only using one carrier strand of hemp, bring the unstrung carrier strand down next to the strung one and continue using the outside strands, knotting them to the two center carrier strands.

  5. Step 5

Make sure the bead is held in place correctly. If you are using a flat bead, make sure the outside strands are looped around the outside of the bead following the shape of the bead itself instead of getting stuck behind your second bead. What turns a hemp necklace from a novice project into a fabulous piece of jewelry is attention to detail, especially when working with beads.
